Tabitha has the honour of being my very first breeding queen, my introduction to the cat breeding world.
I was lucky enough that Zena Pigden who bred Tabitha kindly allowed me to purchase her and has been the best mentor ever since.
Tabitha was one of those "pretty" Maine Coons and I think one of her most distinguishing features was her colour. It made her stand out. Apart from her good type she also had the most easy-going temperament.
Unfortunately Tabi died (on Feb 7th '04) of complications caused by a condition called Eclampsia after she had her first litter of kittens. The kittens were 4 weeks old. Luckily they were at the age where they could be weaned and able to cope without a mother. I think I was more devastated at losing Tabi then her kittens were. It didnt seem to affect them. They have all grown up and developed into healthy well adjusted cats that are well loved by there new owners. I did keep one of her daughters (Tandoori) to carry on with as a future breeding queen.
Tabitha had been scanned for HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and was clear at 1 year of age. (October 2003)
She was also scanned for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and was also found to be negative.
Tabitha was bred by Zena Pigden of Shiningwater Maine Coons Dunedin (NZ)
She had gained a few breeders awards of merit certificates for Zena at shows, including one at the 2003 Nationals, and has been consistantly placed in the top tens including the 2003 National Show. She had a great first show season and I was so proud of her.
Tabitha was placed 12th Best LH Entire Kitten 2003 in the NZCF National Awards
AND - 9th Best LH entire kitten 2003 in the Southern Region
Tabitha had her first litter of 5 gorgeous kittens on January 7th 2004. She was an excellent mum.
